What should the road through our Village be called?

Apple
We have not had a letter from BCKLWN, but perhaps they have only been sent to people who live along Barroway Drove itself, and not those who live in Hootens Row, Lady Drove or Cuckoo Road for instance. If that is so, it again begs the question, ‘why change the name?’ since the existing address is clearly working as it should, and has for years. Does the letter contain anything specifically about numbering?Any chance of placing a scan of it on here for all to see? (personal details removed first of course). If BCKLWN are offering only these two names, and people are unhappy with them, why put up with it? Maybe it is time to make feelings known to the parish and borough councillors? after all, they are SUPPOSED to represent the council tax payer and work FOR us, not for bureaucrats at BCKLWN.Time for them to earn their choccy biscuits and other expenses I think. If Barroway Drove is to be numbered for ‘SAFETY’ reasons, as the BCKLWN was claiming at its presentation, then Lady Drove, Cuckoo Road etc should be treated the same otherwise the whole thing will be like a pig with one ear.

Watch out for this!A change of road name may well give rise to a new postcode, just as it did when a road in Salter’s Lode was renamed not long ago.The post office continued to use either postcode for about a year but then would only acknowledge the new postcode.I have this from a reliable source but stress that it is not from my own experience. However, it stands to reason that if this is to happen then the BCKLWN will want to keep this news for a later date.See the other thread on this topic for more info and background…http://barrowaydrove.org/smf/index.php/topic,270.15.htmlQuote from my entry dated 20 10 2009 on that thread:’A friend who lives in Salter’s Lode told me that a road there was subject to a name change fairly recently, from Sluice Road to The Lane. Following the changeover every property had to have a new postcode. They were able to use either postcode for a year but had to use the new one afterwards. It seems likely that if the road name is changed here, then all residents will probably be in this position’The Parish council have been totally silent on this subject, so what is the point of them being here?, they are SUPPOSED to represent us!If anyone here objects to any aspect of this scheme the time to complain to BCKLWN is now, and if anyone wants to complain to the man at the top, address your correspondence to Ray Harding, Chief Executive, BCKLWN.

(This post was made originally at the ‘numbering’ thread but also relates to the proposed change of road name).Hmmmmm! I had a chat with a lady from BCKLWN about this today. She said that they had ‘identified a need’ to number Barroway Drove because of the building of new properties which was ‘causing problems’ with regard to identifying them. Therefore, according to her, they approached the Parish Council who, she said, agreed to the imposition of a numbering scheme, as well as a change of road name.Anyone who attended the presentations will recall that we were all told that the PC had said that they did not want a numbering scheme or for the road name to be changed, but that the BC had told them that this was ‘being driven by the emergency services’.The lady to whom I spoke today said that the emergency services can sometimes make requests for numbering but that the approach to the BC could only be actioned if it came from the PC, and that there had not been any representation made by the emergency services with regard to Barroway Drove.Mind you, she also said that she thought ‘Main Road’ was a perfectly acceptable name for a rural village road, citing Burnham Market as having a road of that name, (which, according to Google Maps & Bing Maps, it does not). She also said that the ‘consultation period’ is drawing to a close, so if anyone wants to make any comments on the way this matter has been handled, or on the unimaginative choice of road names, you need to register them now, (in writing), with the BCKLWN and ideally with the PC.It would be a lot better if the BCKLWN could actually tell people the truth of course.

I have a feeling your are right Apple , 6years ago I asked the planning chaps about planning permission on Barroway Drove and was told If its in the village go for it, if not, no chance, but wait a few years ,as its likely to change, this change seems to be coming ,with all Barroway Drove now being classified as” A Village” and unclassified numbers being openly discussed, going to mains sewage ,at the same time I presume other utilities will also go under ground and with Downham Market expanding at a fast rate, its only time before it expands here. I will speak to the planning chaps again and lets see what they have to say [new applications soon?] Logged
